The Professional Fashion Blogger

by Gillian Armour

Here is a teaser from our newest professional certification course "Certified Fashion Blogger" - this course is in production and scheduled for June 10th, 2014 release. We are super excited since many of you have been bugging us (in a good way) for this course!

......A blog can be a revolutionary way to publish your writing without incurring the costs of print production, which can be very high. All you need is a relevant and targeted subject and some inexpensive software, and you can transform your written material into a blog.

However, it can be tough to profit from a blog, simply because the market is overwhelmed with blogs, and many of them are not worth the time it takes to read them. Just because it’s easy to produce a blog doesn't make it good writing.

Make sure your blog is a quality product and doesn’t simply rehash old material. You will injure your credibility as an author if you claim to offer valuable new insights, then disappoint your audience with material they've read a zillion times before. Make sure you spend enough time writing and revising your blog so it's of the highest quality and presents the most current information. A good blog will eventually promote itself; false claims about your blog will make it extremely difficult to promote any future blogs you may write.

Figure out what your subject matter is, and then narrow it down. Your goal is to aim for specificity. Research what's out there already, and try to find a void that your blog might fill. What about a blog about a wedding cake business? Or a blog about antique velvet? How about the fine points of collecting ancient embroidery?

You don't have to have three master’s degrees to write about your subject. People need advice that is easy to read and easily understood. Parents need advice for dealing with their teenagers wearing makeup. College students need to learn how to dress for interviews. The possibilities are endless.

......Assuming you have determined that you do indeed have quality content that answers some question or need of your target audience with NEW information, marketing it is the next step. Here are some preliminary tips to set up your marketing.

1) Develop an effective marketing plan that includes excellent sales copy and excerpted articles. Then post your blog on your website, on a blog-share space or on a guest blog online, and wait for your audience to discover you!
