The key that unlocks the sales potential of your blog is to find a single sentence that becomes your selling handle. This sentence, known as your tagline, states what question or problem your blog answers and the benefits your blog can provide. You can then use that tagline/sentence in every piece of sales and promotional material, and every time anyone asks you about your blog. Ultimately, if you've written a blog that solves a problem or presents a new technique, your blog will bring in both traffic and profits. So be sure to write a tagline sentence that sums up what problem your blog solves and what the benefits of your blog will be to the readers who read it. And then watch your market come to you!
Your blog description—which you can set within your blog platform interface or your HTML—is what describes your blog or website in search results (see example next page). Be sure to use your tagline in this description to give searchers a fast snapshot of what your blog is all about when it pops up from a search engine.
Using the right words in your description will also help bring your site up in a search result list. When a user types in a phrase such as “fashion blog”—or keywords more specific to the type of blog you are offering—your blog should appear as high in the list as possible.
Speaking of keywords, the words you use as “meta tags” (another helpful way to bring traffic to your site, from within your blog hosting platform or HTML) should be very specific and targeted, and should only describe two or three of your key topics, at most.
Search engines (especially G**gle) have built in language that alerts them when a website is abusing keywords. They know, as we know, that keywords attract attention. But users have been overly using keywords on their webpages and this abuse has caused Google to reject sites from their search engine. Don’t ask me how this works, it’s a secret that only G**gle knows. Sites that abuse the use of keywords will pay the price in the end. You will likely lose traffic and defeat the purpose of your hard work to get noticed in search engines.
